Managing Post-Surgical Pain
One of a patient's biggest fears or questions when it comes to surgery is how they are going to feel afterwards. Many patients will experience post-surgical pain afterwards but this pain is easily manageable and there are many available options to help alleviate this symptom regardless of the type of surgery you have had.
PAIN MEDICATION
Pain medication will be prescribed by your physician to help mitigate any pain symptoms. You should take the medication as prescribed and follow up with your physician or pharmacist with any questions regarding your medication. There are many different types of medication prescribed and it will be specific to your current condition and surgical procedure. These can range from anti-inflammatory medication, opioid medication, neuroinhibitors, and more.
ICE
Ice can be applied topically to decrease inflammation, decrease pain signals and help with numbing the area. This works best at the site of the incision or at your main pain generator. The biggest consideration to remember with ice is to not leave it on exposed skin for longer than 15-20 minute increments and do not put on areas of impaired sensation.
MOVEMENT
Gentle movements can improve blood flow to the surrounding tissue and decrease spasms and pain. Most surgeries will come with post-operative restrictions so make sure to adhere to all restrictions. If you are unsure what movement is safe and effective, reach out to your local physical therapist for instruction and assistance. Movement can also prevent adhesions or scarring of tissue and improve long term recovery.
ELEVATION
Many surgeries will come with localized edema and swelling to the area afterwards. This can often lead to increased pressure and throbbing in the area. Elevating the area above the level of your heart can assist the lymphatic system and decrease edema.
